South Korea’s export total for 2026 has already surpassed its previous full-year record, with shipments reaching $709.4 billion year-to-date, according to Reuters. The milestone was driven largely by a surge in semiconductor sales, which have tripled compared with the same period last year, as reported by CNBC.
The data, published in early September 2026, reflects strong global demand for artificial intelligence hardware. Yahoo Finance noted that the AI chip boom is a primary factor pushing South Korea’s export numbers past the annual record well before the year ends. The country’s trade performance has been consistently strong, with August marking another month of chip-led growth, according to The Wall Street Journal.
The export surge has also contributed to a record current account surplus in July, as BusinessKorea reported. That surplus indicates that the inflow of money from trade and investment is outpacing outflows by a wider margin than ever before, a sign of overall economic health tied to the tech sector.
